MISSION: Investigate the Endangered Grey Nurse Shark
The East Australian Grey Nurse is the only shark in the world that is critically endangered. Why is this and what is being done to save them?
Riley heads to north Queensland to observe them in the wild at one of the few sites where the animals are showing signs of recovery. Then he takes time out at the Sea Life Aquariums in Mooloolaba and Sydney to look at the role aquariums are playing in educating the public about the plight of the Grey Nurse.
Finally Riley heads just outside Sydney Harbour where there is another aggregation site for this animal. What Riley finds is sobering. More than 50% of the animals are carrying hooks and traces from fisherman’s lines. Riley looks at how close interaction with humans is fraught with difficulty for this endangered animal.
