LOCATION: Stewart Island, New Zealand
MISSION: Learn About the Habituation of Great Whites
Right at the southern end of New Zealand we find Stewart Island, home to the Great White Shark. Their residency provides visitors with the incredible experience of diving with these sharks at close quarters.
But the tourist operation is causing huge friction. Locals are convinced that the shark cage operators are attracting the sharks in, putting them at risk when fishing and diving.
Riley intends to find out what is really happening. He will look into whether the operators are conditioning the animals to follow boats in search of food.
If this is the case, it could be a real issue for Abalone Divers in the area. Commercial abalone divers in New Zealand are required to free dive for their catch placing them in extreme danger from Great White Shark Attack.
